Fact Sheet: End Is Nearing For Baba

The signals are unmistakable now. They indicate that the end is nearing. A police band, large TV screens at vantage points, barricades, check posts and deployment of massive police force.

The scenes at Puttaparthi, the spiritual abode of the renowned Godman Sathya Sai Baba, have a touch of grim reality.

A large number of devotees have starting thronging the pilgrim town, some of them crying and praying on the road for the recovery of Baba. However, the latest medical bulletin spoke of further deterioration in his health condition and his poor response to the medical treatment.

"His respiration is supported by ventilator. He is on the CRRT system of dialysis to assist kidney functioning. His heart rate and blood pressure continue to be low and continue to be supported by drugs," the bulletin issued by the Sri Satya Sai Institute of Higher Medicine said.

There are strong rumours in the town that the worst is feared and an announcement will be made any moment.

Dispatching a police band to Puttaparthi and erection of special TV screens at several key places have further fueled the fears. According to sources, the government has left the decision on removing the ventilator to the Satya Sai Central Trust. The Trust members are huddled together at the hospital where Baba is undergoing treatment and discussing about the next course of action.

Initially, there was a proposal to declare that Baba had attained "Samadhi" but the idea was shot down keeping in view the complications that such an announcement could lead to.
